The Harmonica has a long history in American Roots Music Styles
The Harmonica, often known as the mouth organ is a free reed wind instrument developed in Europe in the early 19th century. Since their beginnings, harmonicas have been an integral instrument in many American roots styles such as blues, bluegrass, folk, country, rock n roll and more. Harmonicas are often grouped diatonically, allowing musicians to use the appropriate harmonica for a given key of music. Because of this, the harmonica is a great instrument to get started on as if you have the right harmonica for a piece of music, every note technically works! Chromatic harmonicas are another type, however are less commonly used and require more skill to apply. Another technique is known as cross harp, this is when the harmonica is employed a fifth above the diatonic key it exists in, allowing for a flattened 7th degree which works great for blues styles.
