EQ is short for equalisation and gives the player control over the EQ curve of their instrument. Compressors control the attack and release of an instruments signal. This can result in controlling dynamics or adding sustain but can also tonally adjust your instrument by changing transient qualities which can sharpen or dull your instruments attack.
