With a history that derives from instruments used in the Caribbean in the 17th century, the Banjo is one of the most recognisable instrument from American folk and roots styles. The banjo became widely used in the travelling minstrel shows of the 19th century and has since been a staple of American old-time music. Banjos can often be seen in genres such as folk, blues, bluegrass, country and jazz but also quite often in Irish folk music.
