With the introduction of the Redwood Series, Maton has found a new voice in the world of acoustic guitars. There is something truly magical in the tone produced by the combination of a Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) soundboard and Tasmanian Myrtle (Nothofagus cunninghamii) back and sides. The Redwood is plantation grown and sustainably harvested from the Otway Ranges in Victoria, while the Myrtle comes from Maton’s longstanding supplier in Tasmania, who also provides the timber used to build the Joe Robinson Signature model.
Tonally, Redwood can be compared to Western Red Cedar, though it offers a stronger treble presence and a more dynamic response than typically found in Cedar. Tasmanian Myrtle (or Tassie Myrtle, as we Aussies call it) delivers a smooth, maple-like tone, and when paired with Redwood it adds an extra layer of warmth and sustain to the overall sound of the instrument.
The result is intriguing. The tone produced by these guitars is rich and complex, with all the expected frequencies present and something more beyond them. The blend of overtones and the sensitivity to subtle variations in playing technique open up new possibilities for the player, creating an instrument that is both inspiring and hard to put down.
